Small train supplies water to mountain for 44 years

For residents in Huojugou village in China’s Changbai Mountains, a train whistl

e is a euphonious sound that will bring gurgling water to their kitchen and bathhouse.

For 44 years, the mountainous village and several others in northeast China’s Jilin Province

have relied on a train, which only has one locomotive and one tank car, to provide their water supply.

The train commutes between the towns of Songshu and Baihe, nestled deep in Changbai Mountain. Since 1975, it has run for m

ore than 1.6 million km, delivering water to over 2,600 nearby villagers that had limited access to clean water.

Though cisterns have been built to store water unloaded from the trains, villagers along the line

still keep the tradition of welcoming the train in person, clanking their buckets and bottles.

Fetching water used to be a big headache. We had to travel to a far-away river to get water and e

ven make a hole in the ice during winter,” said Li Zuopei, an 80-year-old resident in Yingbishan village.

“Then the small train sent water right to our doorsteps, and it’s amaz

ing that the service has been going on uninterrupted for so many years,” said Li.

All the devices were judged to be viable, and the package

sent to Heathrow Airport burst into flames after being opened by staff. Nobody was injured by the devices and no arrests have been made.

The packages were posted with Irish stamps and had return addresses in Dublin, prompting Irish police to join the investigation. The packages were all A4-size

d white postal bags containing yellow padded bags, which were capable of igniting when opened.

Police Scotland confirmed that a controlled explosion was carried out on the p

ackage found at the University of Glasgow on March 6 as a precautionary measure.

The Metropolitan Police and Police Scotland said in a joint statem

ent that the devices “bore similarities” to past packages “linked to dissident groups asso

ciated with Northern Ireland related terrorism,” and that “officers were already looking at this as a line of enquiry.”

The devices did not cause any injuries or damage.

A preliminary KNKT report said the crew of Air Lion Flight 610 stru

ruggled to override the plane’s automatic systems in the minutes before it plunged into the oc

ean. The system pulled the plane’s nose down more than two dozen times, the report said.

The report said the MCAS system was responding to incorrect data transmitted by an AOA sens

or. A different flight crew experienced the same issue on a flight from Denpasar to Jakarta the previous day,

but had turned off the MCAS and took manual control of the plane, the report said.

Once in Jakarta, a Lion Air technician checked the plane again and gave it the green lig

ht to fly on its final flight, from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang on the Indonesian island of Bangka.

The jet crashed 13 minutes after takeoff.

Experts have pointed to similarities between the Lion Air crash six months ago and last w

eek’s Ethiopian Airlines crash, which killed all 157 people on board. Both were Boeing 737 Max 8 pla

nes that were equipped with the same automated flight software and both crashed minutes after takeoff.

China offers tax relief to overseas talent working in Greater

Based on the individual income tax differentials between the Chinese mainland and

Hong Kong, overseas high-end talent and professionals in short supply that work in the Greater Bay Area will g

et subsidies from Guangdong province and Shenzhen municipality to offset the differentials, according to the MOF.

The subsidies will be exempt from paying individual income tax.

The policy, effective from January 2019 to the end of 2023, applies to nine cities in Guangdo

ng — Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing, the ministry said.

It said the move aimed to encourage the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Consisting of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and the nine cities in

Guangdong, the area covers 56,000 square km. It had a combined population of about 70 million at the end of 2017.

If they don’t talk to us, we’re going to do something that’s

going to be very severe economically,” Trump said. “We’re going to tariff a lot of their products coming in.”

Most leaders go out of their way to avoid antagonizing their counterparts and wading into their delicate domestic politics.

  Not Trump.

The exchange also revealed another one of Trump’s political tools: his fervent effort to in

ject an appeal to his base — in this case on a signature issue, trade — into almost every political situation.

  Trump vs. Congress

Trump also launched a mini-campaign rally, seizing on the Senate vote undoing his emergency declaration, to spell

out his hardline policies on immigration and the wall — always with an eye on his most loyal voters.

In an interview published by Breitbart News this week, Trump revealed another aspect of his character — a sens

e that he is being persecuted unfairly — that helps him identify with voters who feel neglected by political elites.

There were 215 million single people in China at the

end of 2017, accounting for about 16 percent of the population, ac

cording to the National Bureau of Statistics. Marriage registrations have fallen every year

since 2014, while the divorce rate has risen for 16 consecutive years, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Dining, traveling and pursuing activities individually have also become increasingly popular with singles in China.

Tang Chuan, a researcher with Sinolink Securities, said that without family burdens, singles

seem to be less inclined to save money, and their willingness to spend offers great potential for boosting the economy.

Sinolink Securities conducted research on singles born from 1985 to 1995 and found that about 40 percent of those in first- an

d second-tier cities live from paycheck to paycheck, while in lower-tier cities, the proportion is as high as 76 percent.

Innovation will drive economy in the futurepowered robot welco

Delivering the Government Work Report to the national legislature on Tuesday, Premier Li Keqiang said the country would do mo

re to boost innovation while laying the emphasis on ethical scientific research. Over the past few years, the fast development of Ch

ina’s science and technology sector has caught the eye of people both at home and abroad. How did China make brea

kthrough achievements in the science and technology sector? And what direction should the sector take in the futu

re? Two experts share their views on the issue with China Daily’s Liu Jianna. Excerpts follow:

  Several factors behind progress

China has progressed by leaps and bounds in the science a

nd technology sector because of multiple factors. First, thanks to its rapid economic growth, Chin

a has invested huge funds in the science and technology sector. And the results are there for all to see.

Second, China has used its research and development funds more effectively by employing more researchers in the field o

f science and technology thanks to the rising number of Chinese researchers and their somewhat low average income.

The Long March 11 will fulfill four missions this year

including the nation’s first sea-based launch, which will take place in the

Yellow Sea, according to plans of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp.

Jin Xin, deputy project manager of Long March 11, said a sea-based mission would have a lower risk of

Marvel’s “Black Panther” looked like a contender by claiming a pair of early awards, and made

history in the process: Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler became the first African-American w

omen to win for costume design and production design, respectively. The film was also honored for its musical score.

”Roma” didn’t walk away empty handed, earing best foreig

Cuaron’s marks the fifth time a Mexican director has won that

award in the past six years, a stretch that includes his previous win for “Gravity” in 2014.

Guillermo Del Toro — who presented the statuette to Cuaron — was t

Extended talks raise hopes there’s a deal in the offingChi

The extending of the talks between China and the United States to resolve their trade and econo

mic frictions will hopefully give substance to the optimism expressed by both sides that they can reach a deal.

US President Donald Trump, senior US officials, and Vice-Premier Liu He, the special envoy of President Xi Jinping, who is h

eading the Chinese delegation, all expressed the belief on Friday that the two sides have made significant progress to

ward reaching a comprehensive agreement that will put an end to the current trade standoff.

It is to be expected that the discussions at this stage will be the toughest test ye

t for the two teams of negotiators, and their task is not one to be envied. However, the un

scheduled two-day extension to their discussions indicates that tangible headway is being made in their joint effo

rts to find a mutually acceptable way to resolve their differences and put an end to their quarrel.

Given what was said on Friday, it seems the talks have gone more deeply and ext

ensively into the bilateral relationship than either side initially anticipated. As US P

resident Donald Trump observed, “we’re covering things that we didn’t even know we’d be covering.”
