I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support

of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump — I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until

they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad,” Trump told the conservative website.

Trump’s incessant appeals for his base are undeniably effective.

One Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, made an 11th

hour switch of his vote on the declaration of national emergency, falling into line behind the President.

A top GOP official in North Carolina told CNN’s Jim Acosta that

Tillis was under fierce pressure ahead of a potential primary challenge next year.

The official said, Tillis is “getting hit hard in the state.”

It wasn’t quite a George Clooney or Brad Pitt heist, but police say a brazen robbery attempt ended with gunfire and the suspect hospitalized in Las Vegas.

About 9:45 p.m. local time Friday, an armed man entered a packed Bell

agio Hotel and Casino and demanded money from a caged poker area, Las Vegas Met

ropolitan Police Capt. Nichole Splinter said.
He then fled and tried to steal a vehicle that ha

d just pulled into the valet lot, but he was immediately confronted by four police officers, Splinter said.

Mocking O’Rourke’s gestures might seem a frivolous at a time

of national political angst and with a heavy duty policy debate already under way. But Trump is an expert at trivializing and belittling opponents, to de

tract from the gravity of their arguments and to feed the conservative media machine.

His diagnosis of Jeb Bush’s “low energy” four years ago established a narrative about the former Florida gove

rnor’s campaign that hinted at a grain of truth. The one-time GOP front-runner could never recover.

At one point in the meeting Tump, said he wasn’t going to “comment on Bre

xit,” but characteristically unable to constrain himself, could barely leave the topic alone.

At the start of his meeting, Trump welcomed Varadkar, and poin

ting out that his visitor was in a difficult position over Britain’s tortured attempts to comp

lete its withdrawal from the European Union, which could harm Ireland’s peace and prosperity.

Tang said, “Chinese food is quite complicated to mak

so single people think it is a waste of time compared with ordering takeout,” adding that on major food

delivery platform Meituan-Dianping, about 65 percent of the orders are made by singles ages 20 to 30.

Others choose to dine out. A recent report by global market research company Kantar Worldpanel found that 46 percent of interviewees said they had eaten

alone in the past 24 hours, up by 9 percent from 2017. Some 16 percent of respondents said they preferred to eat out alone.

Liu Chang, 24, a postgraduate at Renmin University of China in Beijing, said she likes to ex

perience celebrity restaurants recommended by food review platforms. She has visited them alone many times.

“Finding friends you like to dine with can be difficult sometimes. In view of this, I would rath

er eat alone, which can also be enjoyable and relaxing, as I can do whatever I like,” she said.

Kim Song, North Korea’s envoy to the United Nations, sent a

r Monday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for the UN Security Council to drop the sanctions, North Korean state media reported.

”The ‘sanctions resolutions’ of the Security Council aga

inst the DPRK (North Korea’s official name), that prohibit even the shipment of computers and o

ther electronic devices widely used at societies and homes of today, are indeed the action against humanity to dest

roy modern civilization and turn the society back in a (medieval) dark age,” the letter read.

The issue of sanctions has been a key sticking point in talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said North Korea asked for removal of five of the 11 sets of sanctions levied

by the United Nations — those that “hamper the economy and the livelihood of our people.”

But the Trump administration has said that price was too steep for what North Korea was offering.

Delivering the Government Work Report to the national legislature on Tuesday, Premier Li Keqiang said the country would do mo

re to boost innovation while laying the emphasis on ethical scientific research. Over the past few years, the fast development of Ch

ina’s science and technology sector has caught the eye of people both at home and abroad. How did China make brea

kthrough achievements in the science and technology sector? And what direction should the sector take in the futu

re? Two experts share their views on the issue with China Daily’s Liu Jianna. Excerpts follow:

  Several factors behind progress

China has progressed by leaps and bounds in the science a

nd technology sector because of multiple factors. First, thanks to its rapid economic growth, Chin

a has invested huge funds in the science and technology sector. And the results are there for all to see.

Second, China has used its research and development funds more effectively by employing more researchers in the field o

f science and technology thanks to the rising number of Chinese researchers and their somewhat low average income.

The draft law also has clear positions on the protection of f

foreign investors’ rights regarding issues such as intellectual property rights protection a

nd technology transfer that are of common concern to foreign investors, according to Zhang.

Investments from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions are distinctive

in a way that they are not foreign investment, but are not entirely equivalent to domestic c

apital, and in practice, they are managed with reference to foreign investments, Zhang said.

With the new foreign investment law in place, relevant legal appli

cation arrangements will not be changed, and legal systems regarding investment from Hon

g Kong, Macao and Taiwan will be continuously revised and improved in coherence to the needs of the practice, and

will further provide a more open and easy business environment for investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, he said.

Video of the incident shows Williams and another man str

before the man punches Williams in the face, knocking his hat off.

The suspect is then seen getting close to Williams’ face and shouting profanities at him. He punches Williams in the face once more before walking away.

Williams was at UC Berkeley to recruit students for a yet-to-be-formed chapter of Turning Point USA, a conser

vative advocacy group that bills itself as the right’s alternative to liberal activism on college campuses.

A spokesperson for Williams said that he was a field re

presentative for the Leadership Institute, a group that helps train conservative leaders.

Neither Williams nor the man suspected of punching him are students at UC Berkeley.

The University of California Police Department said they had identifi

ed the suspect as Zachary Greenberg, and that he had been arrested and booked. Police added that t

he case would be presented to the district attorney’s office for “consideration of the filing of criminal charges.”

The opening of 5G stations also means the Tian’anmen Square

will become a “5G smart square”. According to the report, 5G networks not only have better signals and faster download speeds, but also have a far-reaching impact on large tourist attr

actions such as Tian’anmen Square and the Palace Museum. In addition to meeting the needs of high-speed internet ac

cess and mobile payment, 5G network can also support 4K HD video calling, ultra-high-definition (UHD) multi-c

hannel video transmission and other services, so as to bring better experiences for the general public and tourists.

The Beijing branch of China Unicom has jointly carried out 4K HD image transmi

sion of some famous scenic spots in Beijing with the China Media Group. As a famous scenic spot in Beij

ing, the transmission work of Tian’anmen Square has been carried out through the 5G network.

During the two sessions, the company will also meet the media’s dema

nd for 5G and HD coverage of the two sessions through the 5G network in the Square an

d “the ministerial corridor”— the interview area – in the Great Hall of the People.

In the future, the Beijing branch of China Unicom will cooperate with relevant government departments to deploy smart a

pplications such as HD video monitoring and inspection robots through the 5G network.

So the fact that the to-and-fro is still in progress this far

down the line highlight that there is a shared desire to secure an accord that delivers on the rapport that has been established — also perhaps beyond both side’s expectations.

But it would be getting ahead of the situation to consider the final push tow

ard a consensus on principled, mutually beneficial cooperation all done and

dusted. That consensus, which President Xi identified as the objectiv

e of the talks when he met with the US negotiators after the previous round of neg

otiations in Beijing, has still not been completed, and probably will not be until the two leaders meet to agree on the final det

ails. But there is no doubt that both sides are aware of how momentous such a consensus would be, beyond the tangible rewards it would offer both cou

ntries. For if the two sides can iron out their core differences by abiding by the principles of mutual respect and m

utual benefit, it would reset their relationship in a way that would bode well for the future.

History in the past four decades shows that the two countries benefit in an all-around wa

y from harmonious trade and economic relations, as they provide the ballast for their relationship.

There is obviously still more work to be done. However, if neither side puts a foot wrong, a deal will finally be signed sooner or later.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security

Council, was critical of Trump at a rally Saturday.

”The US has long been dealt blows by our country and our region and thus regularly bares its warmongering teeth,” Shamkhani said, according to state-run Press TV.

”And when a missile is tested thousands of kilometers away, after (issuing empty) threats, all their preside

nt does is put out a tweet,” he said in an apparent reference to North Korea’s missile tests.

Shamkhani said the United States is rethinking the election of Trump.

”American politicians and people are having second thoughts about their choice of presi

dent and acknowledge that the US has been defeated in materializing its foreign policy,” Shamkhani said.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said this week that Iran must resist the United States.

”Giving in to the US will make it impudent; the only way is to resist,” Khamenei said.
